Comparative Stylistics of French and English
The Stylistique comparée du français et de l'anglais has become a standard text in the French-speaking world for the study of comparative stylistics and the training of translators. This updated, first English edition makes Vinay & Darbelnet's classic methodology of translation available to a wider readership. The translation-oriented contrastive grammatical and stylistic analyses of the two languages are extensively exemplified by expressions, phrases and texts. Combining description with methodological guidelines for translation, this volume serves both as a course book and through its detailed index and glossary as a reference manual for specific translation problems.
The last decade has witnessed the unravelling of remarkable new insights into the biology of Vibrio cholerae. These include the discovery of the filamentous phage that encodes cholera toxin, the existence of two chromosomes in V. cholerae, and the sequencing of the whole genome of the V. cholerae O1 strain N16961. These pioneering works have led to an inevitable escalation in the amount of data generated. This book distills the essence of this mighty deluge of information, providing a timely review of the genomics and molecular biology of this important human pathogen. Written by leading V. cholerae experts, the chapters review the most important cutting-edge genetic facets of V. cholerae including its genomic organization, population genetics, molecular epidemiology, and synchronized regulation of gene expression. Other topics include the molecular basis for enhanced transmissibility of cholera during epidemics, survival of the pathogen in the environment, and above all the evolution of the species to attain increased fitness both as a pathogen and an environmental organism. This book is essential reading for everyone with an interest in Vibrio. It is recommended reading for scientists working in microbial pathogenesis, microbial genomics, and antimicrobial research.
Rapport Et Documents Pr sent s Au Deuxi me Atelier Sur la Technologie L utilization Et L assurance de Qualit Du Poisson en Afrique
The workshop reviewed progress in post-harvest fish utilization in Africa and made recommendations to FAO, its member countries and institutes interested in fish utilization in Africa. The experts reviewed in particular fresh or live fish handling, fish processing, post-harvests loss assessment, quality and safety, and marketing and socio-economic issues.
Maximising the value of marine by products
A complete review of the characterization, recovery, processing, and applications of marine by-products, Maximising the Value of Marine By-Products begins with a summary of the physical and chemical properties of marine proteins and lipids and assesses methods for their extraction and recovery. The book goes on to examine the various applications of by-products in the food industry, including health-promoting ingredients such as marine oils and calcium, as well as enzymes, antioxidants, flavorings, and pigments. The book concludes with discussions of the utilization of marine by-products in diverse areas such as agriculture, medicine, and energy production.
Basic Food Microbiology
The second edition of Basic Food Microbiology follows the same general outline as the highly successful first edition. The text has been revised and updated to include as much as possible of the large body of infor mation published since the first edition appeared. Hence, foodborne ill ness now includes listeriosis as well as expanded information about Campylobacter jejuni. Among the suggestions for altering the text was to include flow sheets for food processes. The production of dairy products and beer is now depicted with flow diagrams. In 1954, Herrington made the following statement regarding a review article about lipase that he published in thejournal of Dairy Science: "Some may feel that too much has been omitted; an equal number may feel that too much has been included. So be it." The author is grateful to his family for allowing him to spend the time required for composing this text. He is especially indebted to his partner, Sally, who gave assistance in typing, editing, and proofreading the manuscript. The author also thanks all of those people who allowed the use of their information in the text, tables, and figures. Without this aid, the book would not have been possible. 1 General Aspects of Food BASIC NEEDS Our basic needs include air that contains an adequate amount of oxy· gen, water that is potable, edible food, and shelter. Food provides us with a source of energy needed for work and for various chemical reactions.

Global environmental governance
This volume is part of the constant and demanding work of ICEF (International Court of the Environment Foundation) for the establishment of a Global Environmental Governance. ICEF has for more than twenty years promoted steps for a better international holistic and balanced Governance of the environment at both the political-administrative and jurisdictional levels. By ?governance?, ICEF means institutions and mechanisms for protecting the environment and resolving disputes, to achieve a new and more integrated vision between environmental protection, the growth of the real economy and social development, with the large-scale participation of civil society. In response to today's pressing global environmental threats such as global warming and climate change, achieving better global governance requires an integrated legal and institutional response as well as a careful design of sustainable environmental policies at the national, regional and international levels. This volume is divided into 4 parts: Part I presents the need for global environmental governance, Part II refers to a new approach to the environmental question founded on the relationship between human rights and the environment; Part III is dedicated to environmental governance at national, European and international levels; and Part IV contains some suggestions about Projects on the executive role in relation to the environment and on the international regulation of the environment, and it highlights the last proposal of Pope Benedict XVI for a World Political Authority for governing the economy and protecting the environment at the global level.
